Subject: Strange death

Big Sky Country
Found a yrlg cut back steer dead today.

A late born dink last fall, now maybe 700# and was coming along nicely.

Probably dead 24 hours or less.

Bloated up slightly.

A patch of hide missing in brisket area. About the size of a basketball.

Very symmetrical--oval, not round.

Very neatly removed.

The brisket looks like it was sawn or planed flat.

I have never seen that before.

No signs of big predators, no hamstrung, no bite or chew marks anywhere.

Anus and everyplace else --with exception of brisket and eyes pecked by birds---is without blemish.

Only things working on it is exposed area is full of flys and ravens have started to salvage.

Called a livestock guy who works for usda--govt trapper.

He's been flying here, trying to kill wolves, said they're killing all up and down the front. But neither of us thought this was predator.

He said he sees what I've described once or twice a yr.

But don't really know what does it.

There are rattlesnakes out in that field.

I am really clueless.

????
