Callao, Missouri | Covering the pile with lime will almost eliminate the smell until you spread. Mixing the pile with lime before spreading will reduce the odor quite a bit, but not enough to suit a sensitive nose. This will cause you to lose some N though. Late summer/early fall can be the worst smell times because the heat of the day warms the ground, then the cool nights put a ceiling in on any smell that volitized earlier during warmer temperatures. Springtime seems a lot more forgiving because the air is circulating much more. Winter time can be the best but it will smell close to the field for a long time, yet your neighbors a half mile away will probably not even notice you spread.
I have heard that tarping a pile for very long can turn it into a lot of mush.
