I do industrial maintenance in a factory. Started in 1998. The thing I see from unions, on the skilled trade side anyway, is without them no one is specialized and has a chance to hone their skills like the old days. I'm pretty good at multi-craft industrial maintenance, but I can't hold a candle in any one trade, to some of the old guys that have retired the last few years. The old welders are way better than me. The old electricians are way better than me. The old pipe fitters are way better than me. So on and so on.....
