I am in the northern piedmont region of NC in Granville county. I did that last year...fed hay through fall allowing the fescue to grow. Worked pretty well and I will most likely do it again this year. I agree with putting hay out in better weather!!! Another thing I am doing is planting some winter annuals for the cattle and that helps as well. I think your suggestion is right on!
