Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska
Experienced what your going through 2 years ago. Tough deal. I didn't consider seed selection based on green snap scores very much until after that year.
Here's my experience. You won't get much compensation from the plants that are left because at this stage the ear size has pretty much been determined. Flying on a cover crop is a great idea to keep the weeds down. Now that you have half as many plants sunlight will reach the ground and the weeds will take off.Cover crops will add a lot to your grazing. Our stands were thinned out so much I didn't even graze ours that winter. I did not do a cover crop but wished I had.
It';s a tough thing to have to live with the rest of the year so make the best of a bad situation.
