Subject: RE: Fire

NE Nebraska
Hard to keep a tire fire a secret !
But a small trash fire can spread real quick. Many years ago as a newlywed it was a beautiful December day and I spent it cleaning up outside and then started the brush on fire in a big barrel. I went inside for a bit but then saw the entire back yard and the poplars were on fire.
I was too embarrassed to call the fire department so I called husband who was at his parents farm about 10 miles away. This was pre cell phone era. He came home expecting a small fire but when he came over the hill and saw the poplars he realized I had a problem.
By then I had put the grass fire out with a scoop shovel and we let the rest burn.
Late in the afternoon some neighbors called asking if they could stop by that evening to visit. Turned out it was a surprise housewarming party. The house smelled like smoke to begin with, but this was a whole different era because the guys had brought their ash trays, cigarettes and decks of cards and got busy playing sheephead. They never minded the smoke.
