Kid needed a little different type of reward/ incentive plan. You gave him a mower, and now he has no reason in his head that he needs to keep working for it. He can't see a reward for continuing to work.
Would have needed a structure where he keeps getting something for mowing,
Sounds like his folks aren't any help in educating the kid to be responsible, so that is a dead end; and a reason he is the way he is.
