Southern Idaho | We don't grow hard red spring because the protein requirements scare us, but we usually forward contract close to 100 percent of our other wheat every year. We have priced 120 percent a few times when we were near certain the pice would drop and hasn't hurt us yet. Last time we did that the price had dropped over a dollar at time of delivery so it worked out pretty good. We have contracted hard red winter for years but lately been growing soft white as it yields better, pays a little bit more lately, and doesn't have the protein requirement. We can grow a pretty consistently good wheat crop here with irrigation so there is not much risk except for low protein on hard red spring. | |
