Subject: RE: Kansas grass fires

East of Dodge City, KS
Yesterday I was about 3 minutes behind a flatbed trailer hauling processed cotton from the gin. Somehow, the cotton caught fire while the semi was heading west on Highway 54. He was dropping pieces of burning cotton along the road and for three miles, there were fires started. He stopped at the east edge of Mullinville, unhooked the tractor from the trailer of cotton, and the load burned while fire crews from several counties came to fight the fires. Three Blackhawk helicopters assisted, and not only did pastures burn, but grassland, stalks. and a couple of old sheds. Who would think cotton bales could ignite and burn?

Today's winds were worse and the fields were blowing severely for a while and the State Patrol was on the side of the highway with flashing lights today to slow traffic as they drove into the blowing dust.
