Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | Are you sure the 3100 is getting power? Without any indicator lights or display it is difficult to know. The cables that Deere describes are for getting GPS out but they don't mention the power in aspect.
The 3100 was most commonly used with an Ag Leader PF3000, the short jumper cable provided power and ground from the PF3000. The 3100 provided the signal back to the PF3000. This was all accomplished with the jumper cable. The 3100 should work fine in other situations provided that it has power/ground in, an appropriate cable (null modem in many cases) and is setup correctly.
On the 3100 the GPS Port is actually Port B in Trimble terminology. The AUX port is actually Port A.
Whenever I have questions about a situation like this I round up a PF3000 and try the GPS with it. If I can get it to work with the PF3000 then I know the GPS is good and can go from there to try to remedy the other situation.
