My mother is a norsky and lutefisk is something of a tradition in my area. A few churches do fundraiser dinners with it and so forth. I haven't tried it for 20-30 years myself. I don't remember it being that bad but that's not exactly a ringing endorsement when someone says "it's not THAT bad". The funny thing is I've talked to several actual Norwegians, I mean that live in Norway, and they generally don't know what lutefisk is. And certainly don't eat it.
