You name it technology is coming.  Plenty of science fiction stuff in the pipe waiting for the right opportunity.  Economics and "national security" play a part.  If you've read enough science fiction eventually the stuff hits the fan.  Can you imagine how the general public would embrace (read; hard core liberals) a competitively priced meat substitute that was similar in taste an texture.  It would make national news for a year every night and at least once a week for five years.  I'm not kidding.  With this presidential election we went to one extreme, get ready for the next extreme.
