NE ND | Is he hauling fert for a supplier who stocks it or for himself? I looked into this a couple years ago for our fert needs, but you have to haul off the river and the river is closed in the winter so we would need to haul during the open season which also corresponds with the farming season. If he's hauling wheat, he's probably putting it on the spot market in Minny. Just for example, spot basis MGEX yesterday for 14 pro was +80, which would be a $1.55 spread over your local elevator. And if you can buy fert for $100/ton savings as a back haul, you are grossing a little over $3600 per truck gain versus buying fert from your dealer and selling your wheat at the elevator. Subtract your cost of trucking/labor out of that and it actually works out pretty well if you have someone willing to make that run all winter and have a place to pick up fert from all winter long.
I looked into this same scenario a couple years ago, but hauling soys down and fert back, but ran into the river timing issue.
