If you are putting 6 -6oz cups of water in your coffee maker, then you need 6 heaping tablespoons of grounds.
The filtering is for keeping crud out of your maker, and the cold water recommendation is to keep people from pouring hot water in the maker, which I think will result in too hot of a brew. Proper coffee making is supposed to use slightly less than boiling when it hits the grounds.
