Not sure about he sophomore slump thing. But I think you will be happy you upped the calf milk
We are feeding close to 12L of whole milk a day to our calves. And every time the vet comes out he comments on how good our calves look. We haven't lost a calf born alive in over 3 years. And if they do get scours or sick they can get over it easily. Seems like all the research lately is saying more milk as calves = future milk production.
