Not a dumb question. I have no concern with running those pairs with your other heifers. The concern is the milk/udder on those new mommas. 3wk old calves you would probably be okay but I might wait till week 4 or 5 if it was me. It's important to have those breed heifers in good body condition going into calving. BCS 6 is ideal. The reason is you don't want to push those heifers to hard soon after they have calved because they will produce an abundance of milk. That young calf isn't big enough to suck that udder dry and then that milk just sits in the udder and basically goes sore. When that happens the young calf can have problems mainly scours and then your in a world of hurt. Putting them on that rye could really produce to much milk for a calf so young. I put heifer pairs on wheat this spring but I waiting till calves were close to 5 wks old to be on the safe side. Calves did really well and the new mommas really kept there body condition and we're ready for breeding soon after.
