Subject: RE: Corn rating

Pittsburg, Kansas

We used to see that way too regularly in our area. Years ago when full season hybrids were the norm here Pioneer was the only company that had test plots out that were experimenting with shorter season corn (to get ahead of our 9 years out of 10 annual heat and drought in July). They came up with a variety and pretty well converted this area from what had become a mostly milo area back to corn.

When other companies got into the act at first they just moved northern corn that did well up north down here. Well some years it worked and some years the hybrids fell flat on their face. And looked pretty well like those pictures. Because the heat started too early and got them. We need hybrids that pollinated early and could stand some heat in pollination.

I think most companies now have got adapted varieties to our conditions. But it took them a while to not have fields that looked like the pictures.

It still happens sometimes here, but the hybrid makes a lot of difference in how much heat it can take during pollination.
