NW Washington | Here is some black clumping bamboo that they say is hardy into growing zone 6 which I am guess southern Illinois is in. Yes, you don't want the kind that spreads by rhizomes underground because it becomes a weed in a hurry.
I have some black bamboo and so far it has not spread, but it is getting big, maybe too big.
