Subject: RE: September corn

NW Iowa
I am in a similar situation as you, only that I am buying not selling.

The way I look at it...if you were needing to buy corn in Sept (say from an elevator), what board price would you be paying? Sept...Now on the other hand, if you weren't selling the corn as silage and you were chopping it, what price would you be getting for it at the elevator? Most likely Dec if it was going straight to town. But if you were harvesting your own corn for either grain or silage, same principle applies...if you wanted to know the 'value' of the silage, you would be pricing it on Dec, not Sept since if you did not chop it, it would be grain.

But, like mentioned, lots of ways to do it. My reasoning could be spot on, or could be completely wrong.
