N.W. Ohio | We had a picture perfect start to the 2017 planting season the week of April 22. Got 75% of our corn planted that week. We didn't start soybeans because of the wet/cold forecast. Then came the three weeks of persistant rain and cold temperatures. Our corn pretty much all survived but then was crusted in badly. Rotary hoed.... some twice. Even pulled the phoenix harrow over quite a bit of acres to losten the solid crust. It looked like we would be re-planting the majority of the corn, then on May 18,19 and 20th got a couple tenths each day and it let most of the corn out, but unfortunately much had already leafed out underground with the heat of several days previous. The result was stands that range from 15,000 to 30,000. With 25,000 being common. We got the last 25% of corn planted two weeks ago and is up with good stands. We are half done with beans and waiting for ground to dry out, with rain in the forecast starting Saturday. Honestly some of this corn should have been killed off and replanted, but the weather really allowed no time to do so. Several neighbors still have corn to plant yet. I know this is all backyarditis, But it certainly sounds like a pretty sizable area that is affected. Our stands can make decent corn, but certainly won't make above average yields here. Attaching a couple of pictures. I'm just gonna say that it is possible that those that think the crop is off to a good start are suffering with backyarditis also.
