I guess no one knows Q. I'm going with something to do with water vapor in the air. Cooler nighttime temps is why it appears in the evening. I'll post if I find it out.


Yep, but there's something else that makes it show up so profoundly.

NEXRAD systems operate in two different modes: "Clear Air Mode", and "Precipitation Mode". When there's no threat of storms in the forecast area they switch to Clear Air Mode which means the antenna spins slowly and it returns a higher resolution image. After storms pass and the radar station is switched to Clear Air Mode, there's a lot of moisture in the air it shows up in the image as faint echo (basically it's light fog/clouds in the low level).
