Central Texas | Sale I normally go to on Tuesday had special replacement cow sale. Didn't need any more cows but was prepared to pick off some bargains that could present themselves late in sale if the mad money was to run out. Bought 3 separate older pairs with approx 350 lb calves for $1025/pair then they run 11 calves from set of pairs thru ring onto scales then brought cows in. While getting cows into ring auctioneer announces calves weigh right at 390. My pencil told me could pay up to $1150/pair and got them bought for $1125. Since had now bought 14 pairs was preparing to leave when they brought another group of 11 pair with smaller calves into ring. My pencil had told me could pay up to $850 for them. Bidding on them had slowed at $800 so I bid $825 and damned if I didn't get them. So now have bought 25 pair which for my trailer would be 3 loads packed to brim. Called a friend with 32' trailer and he agreed to haul cows in 2 trips and I would haul all calves in one load. Went few miles out of the way to weigh the load of calves. Calves avg 290lb. Figure calves worth just under $500 so have just under $500 in thin big framed older cows that weigh over 1000lb. Think got them bought right with good upgrade potential. Got them home and settled in by dark.
Whew, what a day!!
