central ND/SD border | I've wondered this for a while. Once our cows get close to calving we move the group into a smaller pen to keep watch better and then move the pairs after calving. Our heifers have been ultra-sounded and when their dates approach we put them in 40x100 ft pen/barn. Sometimes they end up staying there for a week or more before calving.
For humans, if the doctors want to delay labor they put the woman on "bed rest", so does putting cows in a small pen the same as "bed rest?"
I know the ultra-sounded dates are approx. and it varies by animals, but I don't want the calf to stay in longer, get bigger and make it harder to get out. | |
