I think you should leave the light on. I have similar sized pens in my old shed, and I think they are a little too small. I leave the lights on all calving season as long as there is a pair in one of the stalls. I have not had any trouble, but I attribute that to leaving the light on.

Especially if there are 2-3-4 pairs in the shed. Those mommas get worked up real quick if there is a calf noise, even if it isn't there own calf. If the mom can see there own calf, they give it a quick sniff and calm back down.
