fertilizr usually helps in dry years-your neighbor that has mined the soil has 92 bu corn-for some reason you harvest 165 bu corn-he collects insurance you hit no insurance payout-year after year you have good to great yields-maybe 2 out of 6 years you have great yields-guy that mined has good yields but never great yields-your great yields pay for all the fertilizer for 6 years-mined fields never get to great yields to help pay for fertilizer-
