I have baled bean straw from a conventional combine with no chopper. I wouldn't do it that way again, it is pretty coarse. Much better if you run it through the chopper first and windrow. Will have less straw picked up but it will make better bedding. I would prefer it to cornstalks though. Still doesn't beat wheat straw though.

Mine is a rotar combine and a silage bailer with those cutters on it.
If I run through the chopper first I'll have to rake. I'm trying to save one trip plus I have raked behind the chopper before trying to windrow and burn the straw. Is so little raked it its not worth running a bailer. Was not enough to burn good.
