| The industry is seriously pulling cattle ahead as witnessed by another 3 lbs. drop in
week over week steer carcass weights and in fact carcass weights are 30 lbs. lower since the first
of the year. Packers that bought cattle for delivery 2-3 week’s out are calling for those cattle for
next week’s kill and I even hear of one major in the north calling around to see if their April
contract cattle are ready yet. People will say pay no attention to the boxed beef market as it is a
lagging indicator, but I can tell you for certain that by talking to my cash beef contacts that beef
supplies right now are tight, and in terms of middle meats, loins in particular, are in extreme
short supply and packers need cattle to kill to fill near term commitments | |
