Subject: RE: Feeding cows at dusk

NE Iowa
We feed 1ce/day in the morning (corn silage and ground hay mixture). We shut-in the cows & heifers close to calving in the evening, so it wouldn't work to feed them when we want to shut them in for the night. We need to have them shut in for calving here in Jan-Feb in NE Iowa, . With that timing, we probably still have 80-90% of the calves born during daylight hours. We check them at night between 10-11 pm and again around 3 am, but have very few born during the night-time. We have a few friends who swear by feeding in evening, but they still check their cows during the night any way, and it seems we don't have any more born during the night than they do.
