what are symptoms of kingpins going bad?

Have you checked the pins at the ends of your leaf springs? Those wear out too.

Use a prybar and put pressure in places to see if there is slack in the king pins or the spring pins. Might have to jack up the truck jacking at the frame and take part of the load off to make it so you can find movement.

If either of these are shot you should be seeing premature and definite tire wear.

Now, if your seeing wear on the fronts and the drives as well then the entire rig needs an alignment.
