Subject: Snow and BNSF logistics

SC Iowa

between the heavy rains on the coast which delays ship loading and these heavy snow reports which is slowing rail movement.....well, it doesn't bode well for a smooth loading season, esp when demand is good....

This from Tregg Cronin at Halo commodities..::

Otherwise the big weather story is along the highline in MT where as much as 50” of snow has fallen in the last week which in turn has produced avalanches and treacherous conditions for traversing trains. Additional snow and ice is likely in coming days, and the weather has caused BNSF to temporarily suspend operations between Shelby and Whitefish in the Hi Line Subdivision. This is a major pinch point for trains, and could impact an already awful logistical situation headed west. Emails from operators on the Columbia River suggest all of the anchorages and anchor buoys are full, and ships are having to wait off-shore for lengthy periods for anchor space or layberths. Even the layberth availability is getting tight with 10 ships waiting at layberth. Around 60 grains hips are either in port, waiting off-shore or waiting with nearby ETAs. With around 40 ships per month worth of loading capacity, the congestion is not expected to ease anytime soon.
