I think you are right.

Soft water needs very little to bind the hardness. The liquid products usually have some acid in them to lower the pH which the AMS cannot do to any great extent.

I use a calculated dose of AMS (actually about 2X the calculated rate because 1/2 sack is about as close as I want to measure when I am filling my tender tank) and 1 gallon of muriatic acid to lower the pH. Spraying mostly glyphosate tank mixes.

A search on AgTalk should come up with the formula to calculate the dose.

Spraying some weeds with higher doses of AMS helps to get spray uptake.
