Subject: Thoughts on unprotected bushels

South Dakota
So the setup is: My usual marketing plan is to be 70-80% hedged on expected bushels by the end of June for the years crop, sell some more as yield is more determined, and have leftover bushels that I may sell during or after harvest. This year, as with many, provided the USDA is right, I ended up with a fair amount of leftover bushels not hedged or priced (Definitely not complaining about the good yields). I've never been big on using other marketing tools like puts and things like that other than hedging up to a year out and rolling to collect carry and basis improvements. The question is: would you ride it out for the possible spring/early summer run up , hedge now because at current prices I can make "some" money off the bushels, or some other marketing tactic? Definitely glad I hedged what I did pre July.

Sorry Sat, I couldn't get away from the farm when you had the meeting in my neck of the woods. Too bad I couldn't have had you swing by to chat & see the place.
