When I was young, I used to stay with a friend that lived in town.  Bedroom was upstairs, no heat, no electric blanket, but about 6 wool blankets on the bed.  Couldn't even roll over once you got in, and you hit the ground running with your clothes in the morning, headed downstairs to dress by the wood stove.  In college, ag frat house, we all slept in one big room, no heat, windows open, but everyone had an electric blanket. Often, the guys sleeping close to the windows woke with snow on their pillow.
