I have a few rattle paddles with and without the rattles. They work well. The rattles work with calves as a little noise is sometime all it takes. I don't let my 10 year old use one with rattles as he would always be making noise with them. I like the non rattle ones for cows. You can swat them right on the face if you have to and not worry about damaging an eye like a conventional sorting stick.
