Let's just suppose an island say the size of Cuba but US territory, was fifty miles off the coast of Virgina and at the end of the Civil War, some Confederates fled to it and occupied it with the military support of Britain. Let's suppose that at the time the US didn't have the military capacity to prevail. Can you imagine the resentment that would fester here?
Don't you have it a little backwards? To be comparable, suppose that the Confederates won the War of Northern Aggression and the remnants of the Union forces fled to the island and occupied it with the support of Britain.
As for the Chinese response, you're right. They've been investing in S.A. for several decades, and the last decade has seen pretty heavy involvement in Africa. This is nothing new. The U.S. soybean farmers need to be prepared for it regardless of who's in the White House.
