Somewhereville, Earth | what i would do is pick the field you want, load it to the big box. change the layer to elevation (if you have RTK or correction of some sort on the machine crossing the field), change the legend to 4 ranges, change the transparency so you can see through the layer. make sure the background image loads, then create a soil sample layer, it will bring up a editing tool based on this will give you a elevation map and reference map underneith to play with, set your point placement that way.
i understand you don't want to do layers, you could just your a blank field boundary and manually place them too....same as above, makesure the background image loads, drop the transparency so you see through to the image layer, and you can manually place points where you need
little different what your doing, but SMS will do it for ya!
