All things being equal, keeping the same brand for the router and extender sometimes makes them get along a little better. If your router is a few generations old it likely doesn't matter tho.
Thry try to make these things smart and auto connect and auto set up; but if they are different brands or different ages you probably have to be a bit more hands on - thrn the auto stuff gets more in the way than helpful.
