Being able to set multiple target depths is handy if you are needing to be at certain elevations to catch existing tile. You may not want the system to run 'autoslope' mode and have to make an extra deep maximum depth with a deeper than desired optimal depth. If you know you need to be at certain elevations at certain points, then you can set those and autoslope mode will do its job while making sure to target those depths at those points instead of making you install deeper than needed runs and involving more machines.

If you hit a rock and have jumped over it, then you may want to change your grade or depths to continue the run. Say you were running a .4 minimum and a rock jumped you up to your minimum depth. You can finish the run with a .2 minimum and gain a little depth so that you don't end up with too shallow depth on your tile...so being able to change these on the fly is handy, otherwise in intellislope he'd have to pull out of the ground, survey a run from there to the end, dig new start, reconnect and then continue. (although ideally if I jumped up too much I'd dig out the rock and restart anyway...)
