Subject: '62 JD 4010 LP, positive or negative ground?

I'm not familiar with LP John Deere 4010/4020's, except for running one for a neighbor years ago. This tractor has been converted to an alternator, and it has a battery box fabricated for a standard rectangular battery/batteries. It was running when parked, but the battery and cables disappeared. The red wire from the distributor is connected to the positive side of the coil, the black wire is to the negative side of the coil. How would I know if it is currently set up as a positive or negative ground? What size battery (or batteries) would get it turning over good in the winter (0 to -20F) ? Would electronic ignition improve starting? Any good resources for this age JD information?
