The best system out there for a reasonable cost is a Fleck 9000 dual tank system (or Fleck 9100 electronic). I see a lot of companies put their own name on these, but they all use the same components. The 9000 uses a meter to measure how much water has been used and only regenerates when you reach the set amount. During a regeneration, the dual tank system uses soft water from one tank to clean the other tank while still furnishing you with soft water the whole time.

I have several of these in use and they work extremely well without using much salt (assuming that you set it correctly based on your water test).

If you search locally, you can find someone that sells them. Just ask for a dual tank with a Fleck 9000. Around here, they sell for around $1200 locally. I see you can buy them online for as low as $860 with free shipping:
