One rule to always use.
Know what you will pay maximum and when the number passes QUIT bidding.

Was responsible for seeing 2 pieces of machinery reached a certain value as the seller had the option of getting that from a dealer.
When bidding faltered on both pieces below the price I started bidding.
Since I knew where I was going and it did not matter to me I bid quick and fast no hesitation and someone followed.
When I reached the price I quit and at least 1 more got into the bidding and prices for both went well above the minimum price.

Did the fast bidding pick up new bidders or were they going to get in before the last call of the auctioneer to sell when I started?
I thought I left it until the last moment to start bidding.
Have often wondered.
