If there is 2-6" under the crop you should have no problem. I agree with starting at the west side and working east. Proper reel position will be important in lifting the crop and feeding it into the head. Going one way on them and driving back empty may be well worth your time and fuel. I've done it before and gained 3 bushels an acre. Use your yeild monitor to check the difference going each way. Tip the feeder saddle all the way forward to get the knife as close to the ground as possible but remember that with a lodged crop you likely will not be able to see any stones that get into the head.
