North Central Illinois | I have transitioned some ground that was kept very clean as far as I can remember (20+ years). Very little weed pressure, except for wild watermelon and something that looks like it is related to pigweed, but stays under 2' tall. Those are only prevalent in low areas that occasionally drown out and result in late season open canopy. I could grow fairly good crops there for a year or two with no weed control at all.
Then there's the home place where I have several velvet leaf per square inch any time I till in the warm season and wait 10 days. Cool season it is lambs quarters. The grasses like foxtail and barnyard grass can be reduced relatively quickly, as can giant ragweed, but some of the broad-leaved plants are around for decades, especially if buried deep. | |
