If they are like these they can isolate the compressor from the rest of the system.  You can close them and remove the compressor without recovering all the refrigerant in the system.  Ok for changing a seal or clutch or fixing an oil leak on the compressor.  As mentioned if the compressor has internal damage the whole system should be cleaned.
