As others said, use a 2x4 cut to length. You will probably have to stand on a step ladder lift up the hood if you can. (The hood is extremely heavy)
Also, make sure the hood is high enough because trying to compress the new struts even an inch is a PITA. I just changed out on my 7220 a couple of months ago.
