If I'm remembering correctly I believe proper opener spacing on an early riser is 1/8" gap at 4 o'clock position. We snug things up and pass a 1/8 punch between the blades to see where it stops, then adjust shims as necessary. It probably goes without saying, but have some of the shim washers on hand before you start.

I doubt an extra shim on one side or the other is going to make much difference in terms of either planter operation or boot wear. If it were me, I'd aim for the same shims on both sides... then if you want to bias it slightly to the leading disc do that during the fine tuning stage (if blades too tight add to the leading; if too loose remove from trailing). How the openers are shimmed will affect alignment of the scrapers and gauge wheels, however even if you put all the shim washers on one side I don't know if it would ever change enough to be a problem.

I've only ever been around the standard blades, so can't provide any meaningful input on the HD options.
