Subject: RE: John Deere 4010 Gas Alternator Conversion

I added an ammeter to my gas 4020 so it's polarity had to be swapped. And the coil primary polarity should be swapped for the best ignition. The gas gauge tends to work poorly with negative ground, so you have to find a replacement gauge and sender made for negative ground to make it work right. The starter is not polarity sensitive.

The charging wire from the alternator to the battery post on the starter solenoid needs to be enlarged, the original wire only had to carry 20 amps and the alternator can put out 3 times that current. At least 8 gauge, maybe 6 gauge. I used 10 gauge silicone insulated and it runs warm but the insulation can stand the heat. Its resistance also limits the peak charging current with a 60 amp alternator to about 35 amps. The better voltage regulation and faster charge of the alternator is great for battery life.
