South Texas | Small mid age cows are often the bargain. Nothing wrong with 800-1000 lb cows but lots of people don't want them, sometimes sell by the pound, and there aren't many pounds, and they don't bring feeder money.
Remember when everybody thought they were gonna get rich on bred heifers? Lot of people breeding them without the ground to support them. Those are pairs now and can come up for a decent price sometimes when one of those people finally gives in. Figure an open heifer is $1200, in 5 months she will be a bred heifer. The pair, in 5 months will be selling the calf and have a bred cow, who is proven to actually breed, and has some idea what to do with a calf. I figure open heifer price plus the sell price of a weaned calf is a good price for heifer pairs, bought a group for less than that a few months back. | |
