My guess would be the HDD going bad. A drive will make several tries if it gets corrupted data on the first swipe. If it were me, I'd be backing up. YMMV
I suppose that could be. I've got several external USB hard drives around. One on the office computer, one on the old laptop with the living room computer, one dedicated one for DISH TV recordings and the one in the shop. The one in the shop is only for music the way things have evolved. I could easily swap them around to see if that helps.
