Can YOU see the difference between locking in a price and locking in a profit?
Absolutely.
I can also see a market that has large swings from the highs to the lows throughout the year. Putting a floor under calf prices with futures options or LRP insurance when prices are high will make the likelihood of a profit more certain.
Grain farmers do, or should do the same. No profit is guaranteed, but hedging against falling prices is good business sense for producers of all kinds.
